Defenses in Cybersecurity (continued)

Firewalls are networking systems that monitor network traffic- they operate based on specific rules and grant/deny permission into computer networks based on these guidelines (they steer away unauthorized users).

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. A VPN is essentially a network that establishes a connection with your device and the VPN provider. Your data is encrypted, as well as your location.

Every single device on the internet has a unique IP (Internet Protocol) address, which is basically how it is identified across the internet for communication purposes. VPNs also let you bypass or sidestep certain precautions on the Internet such as firewalls, and they tunnel over public networks.

Anti-virus software is a great tool to use in order to identify viruses and eventually block them. These types of software are constantly scanning your computer and files for any signs of malware (unintended software that causes damage to your computer). Once they detect a threat, they will take all possible action in order to neutralize that threat.

Now that we have gone over a lot of general cybersecurity topics and terms, in the next lesson, we are going to dive into a specific topic of utmost importance- passwords.
