Making Strong Passwords
Passwords are a key part of our online experience- they are the very thing that can either make or break your digital life. Here are some principles to help you create new passwords, or even change your old ones:
The Longer, The Better: Making your passwords longer will make it harder to hackers to try all possible combinations
Ex. A numerical password that is only 4 digits long will be easier to guess than a password that is eight digits long (there are more combinations to try). Even then, it is a good practice to make your passwords at least 12-14 digits long.
Make Them Uncommon: If you make your password something that other people directly know, chances are that people can easily guess it. This also goes for anything that is commonly known by a lot of people.
Ex. Don’t make your password common words such as “password” or anything else a lot of people know about.
You can make your password a phrase that is hard to remember, or something that is completely random. The idea is to make it less-known so that bad actors will have a hard time figuring it out.
Ex. Making your password your birthday, or the name of your pet dog is a bad idea. Those are details are probably well known. Instead, maybe make your password a phrase from a book, so that fewer people would know about it.
